‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Finale Introduces Abigail Thorn as Triarchy Admiral Sharako Lohar
House of the Dragon Season 2 ends on a rather anti-climactic note, teasing massive battles, new characters, and major upsets about to come. The HBO hit’s second season ends with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) agreeing to surrender King’s Landing — and her son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) — to Rhaenrya Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy). Not that it happens, just that it’s teased. Likewise, we’re told that the Triarchy’s massive fleet, led by Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) is on its way to face Corlys Velaryon’s (Steve Toussaint) forces in the Gullet. There’s a montage of massive armies marching across Westeros, inching closer and closer to annihilating each other for the sake of their respective sides.
All of which is to say that it feels like the action was just about to begin when the credits finally roll on House of the Dragon Season 2. If you’re one of the many fans yearning to find out what happens next, you might be wondering if HBO will even make another season of House of the Dragon. Will there be a House of the Dragon Season 3 on HBO?
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a history of Westeros that acknowledges the truth is open to interpretation. Ergo, House of the Dragon sometimes plays fast and loose with its adaptation of Martin’s own words. Still, the story he started about the civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons” still has a long way to go. Is HBO committed to telling the whole story?
Here’s everything we know about the future of House of the Dragon on HBO…

Will There Be a House of the Dragon Season 3 on HBO?
Yes! HBO has already renewed House of the Dragon for a third season. House of the Dragon Season 3 is definitely happening.
When Will House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere on HBO?
Based on how long past seasons have taken to write, film, and produce, it’s a safe bet to assume that House of the Dragon Season 3 will premiere on HBO some time in 2026.
Upset you won’t get a visit to Westeros in 2025? Don’t fret. HBO is currently shooting their second Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. That new show is positioned to debut sometime next year.
How Many Seasons of House of the Dragon Will HBO Make?
We don’t know yet, in part because House of the Dragon co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal has been rather coy on how many seasons he envisions the series running.
During a May roundtable interview Decider attended, Condal told Consequence’s Liz Shannon Miller that he and the other writers do have a sense of where House of the Dragon will eventually end.
“I think through the process of writing and breaking Season 2, I think it helped us land on — we now know where this particular story ends,” Condal said, noting that House of the Dragon isn’t set up to cover the entire Targaryen dynasty up “until the time of the Mad King.” It’s just concerned with the Dance of the Dragons.
“I’m not really prepared yet to talk about how many seasons remain, but we do know where it goes and now that we’re into the writing and breaking process of Season 3 — because this job never stops moving its feet — it just helps. We know what we’re writing to.”
“We have the book,” Condal said. “All the stories are written. It’s nice to have all that and know where we’re going because I think it’s going to make for a really satisfying end.”
